Redesigning the birthing experience
of Native parents.
In 2021, the WithIn Collaborative worked alongside parents and leaders from tribal lands in and around Humboldt County in Northern California – and with medical practitioners from Providence St. Joseph Hospital. Our focus: How to better the birth experience of Native parents at the hospital.
What emerged was the beginning of connection and repair in a medical system unaware of the harm it was perpetuating. By beginning to implement concrete changes, the hospital aims to provide the care Native parents need. This work continues today.

Big Feelings: Supporting Latino Families in Early Childhood Mental Health
In 2024, First 5 San Mateo County in partnership with WithIn launched Big Feelings to better understand how families—especially Latino families—access early childhood mental health (ECMH) services.
A co-design team of parents and a therapist led the work—listening to families describe the many barriers to their care, including language, immigration concerns, stigma, and power imbalances with providers. What emerged from the team’s design work together is a bilingual online resource hub, entitled, Big Feelings, that provides clear guidance, tools, and scripts to help families navigate ECMH systems.
Just as important as the outcome is the process: parents were partners every step of the way. This project models how agencies can center lived experience to build more accessible, effective support for families.
