Redesigning the birthing experience
of Native parents.
In 2021, the WithIn Collaborative worked alongside parents and leaders from tribal lands in and around Humboldt County in Northern California – and with medical practitioners from Providence St. Joseph Hospital. Our focus: How to better the birth experience of Native parents at the hospital.
What emerged was the beginning of connection and repair in a medical system unaware of the harm it was perpetuating. By beginning to implement concrete changes, the hospital aims to provide the care Native parents need. This work continues today.

Growing visibility, safety and support for Queer families in Napa County
In 2019, WithIn partnered with First 5 Napa County to create the First 5 Napa Network, a multi-sector network of leaders looking to co-create solutions to more equitably center the needs of Napa’s families.
The Rainbow Family Network emerged from the network’s design teams to address the isolation and invisibility Napa’s Queer families experienced in the community. What emerged was opportunities for advocacy, connection and education. This includes:
- Rainbow flags flew at city halls and County offices during Pride month for the first time in the County’s history. Four cities passed ordinances guaranteeing the flag would fly annually.
- The network hosted monthly family gatherings for Queer families.
- The network created Pride Packs – book and craft kits – aimed at all parents and preschools to support them to educate children about race, sexuality and gender.
